Get an accurate representation of soil type with Geocivil’s CPT rigs.

Geocivil was the first company to bring IANZ accredited CPT (Cone PenetrationTesting) technology in New Zealand. Geocivil’s CPT operations are one of the few in NZ to have acquired the IANZ accredited status providing you with high quality and reliable data on which you can count.

Our modern equipment is capable of accessing sites with limited working space. The rigs are specifically engineered to combine both compact design and ease of setup, meaning rapid setup times, saving time and expense for our clients.

We can match our cones to the ground conditions utilising sensitive cones for soft profiles, and robust, high capacity cones where dense and/or gravelly conditions are expected.

The rigs have centrally mounted push rams, utilising the rigs full mass as reactive force which translate in less ground anchoring. The rigs can be fitted with two different soil anchors; a large diameter anchor for soft clays, slits and sands, and a continuous flight anchor for dense and gravelly soils. This ensures we have minimal anchoring failure during soundings.

Pushtube sampling available for disturbed and undisturbed samples up to 66mm.

Our CPT rigs include:

CPT1: LWC100 “Tiny”

  • Rubber track mounted with retractable tracks (down to 800mm wide)
  • Lightweight – less than 1.8 ton fully loaded
  • Compact design – total operational area only 2.6m x 1.7m
  • Push tube sampling capable

CPT2: LWC200 “Bessy”

  • Rubber track mounted – 1.3m track width
  • 3.2 ton mass – less anchoring required
  • Push tube sampling capable
  • 20 ton push capacity

Complimentary services:

  • Hand auger
  • Scale penetrometer

GEOCIVIL performs the key tests used to determine the material characteristics and properties of aggregate materials at every stage of your projects.

You can expect compaction and quality control testing of aggregates in accordance with NZS4407, ASTM D5874 and RTA T276.

Aggregate testing services include:

  • Sampling and seconded sampling
  • Window sampling
  • Test pits
  • Water content
  • Clay index, plasticity index and sand equivalent
  • Broken faces content
  • Particle size distribution
  • Benkelman Beam Deflection Measurements
  • Crushing resistance, weathering resistance and cleanness value
  • Solid density
  • Laboratory CBR
  • Foreign materials in recycled crushed concrete

GEOCIVIL’s Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) can perform scans on a variety of surfaces in a non-destructive manner. It can sense both metallic and non-metallic features providing accurate detection of voids, reinforcing of concrete floor or walls and location of utilities.  It is a simple operation that can translate into significant cost and risk reductions.

Geocivil has 2 different GPR units:

Noggin 1000MHz

As far as GPR goes, our 1000MHz unit is one of the most specialised pieces of GPR equipment.  It is the GPR we rely on for shallow investigations such as void detection and concrete reinforcing inspections. Our Noggin unit saves the scanned data which allows us to perform further analysis back at the lab utilizing specialised computer software. The off-site data analysis is an important component of our GPR investigations as it enables us to highlight key information and produces images that are easy to interpret for the client.

Noggin 250MHz

Our Noggin 250MHz is the unit we use for utility locates. These scans are often done in combination with our field testing as it allows us to detect utilities such as power and gas pipes, fibre and cables lines, water mains as well as sewage. It ensures that drilling is carried out not only in the correct but also the safest areas. Utility locates using GPR are quickly becoming an industry requirement before performing any form of excavation or drilling.

GPR is a technique widely used with applications relating to pavement works, land development, residential and commercial work, assessing concrete structures. It helps identify the “unforeseen”, therefore limiting unnecessary costs and risks, whilst providing information that can help you better manage your projects.

GEOCIVIL’s LWD (Light Weight Deflectometer) technology enables you to efficiently manage and control your compaction works and to improve the quality of your construction.

It is used in all type of earthworks for determining:

  • Resilient soil modulus Evd
  • Degree of compaction
  • Load bearing capacity
  • Spring stiffness K

Complementary services:

  • Static plate load tester
  • Nuclear Densometer Measurement (NDM)
  • Dynamic Cone Penetration test (DCP)
  • Particle size distribution
  • Plasticity index, hand auger, shear vane

GEOCIVIL has been providing laboratory services to contractors (building, construction and roading), engineering consultant, quarries and insurers for over 30 years.
